It may be time to downsize

I was recently caught up in downsizing at my company.
As my division was eliminated, room was made for other priorities in the company.

It occurred to me that life is similar. There comes a time when we need to downsize in order to make room for that which is greater, newer, emerging, will be more beneficial to us in the future. Yes, sometimes we will be challenged to say so long to our past in order to welcome a more purposeful way of living. We must trade the now for the next.

I will admit that this downsizing situation has taken me through a variety of emotions. With that in mind, I ask you to indulge me as I share from two different perspectives. On this issue. First, I’d like to share tops that will help you navigate through your personal downsizing situation. Note: downsizing is not limited to the professional sense. It can come in varying forms such as: change in residence, change in familial/relationship status, change in income, or change in health.

Helping yourself through life’s downsizing situations:

  1. Stay connected to God and the things of God. (Prayer, worship, the Word)  Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Colossians 4:2 NLT
  2. Stay connected to the people of God
  3. Stay connected to positive people. You are likely vulnerable; therefore you need to minimize contact with those who will bring you down.
  4. Listen to God for next steps.
  5. Watch the Lord show who and what you need to downsize. This does not necessarily mean people no longer matter, rather the roles have shifted.
  6. Get some positive affirmations and read at least one out loud each day. I have some posted on sticky notes on my bedroom mirror.
  7. Maintain your level standards and integrity. Psalms 41:12 tells us that God upholds us based on integrity.

There are also times when you must evaluate some things in order to determine whether you need to downsize your life.

  1. Evaluate your life. Is it too crowded or cluttered? Are you constantly on the go? Are you on the verge of burnout?
  2. Evaluate your life’s mission.  Are your actions and activities in alignment with your mission?
  3. Evaluate the personnel-those who play key roles. Have some of their journeys been completed so to speak?

Although my downsizing situation has been unsettling, I can honestly say that I am cautiously optimistic about what is to come. My history with God has taught me that the end of one great chapter means there will be a new one that is full of glory. I must continue turning the pages of this life in order to get there.

  1. There is always a need to downsize something because we collect stuff. Thanks for sharing

  2. Soror Campbell,

Thank you for sharing that pertinent information in relation to downsizing. As a woman of the cloth and a sorority member, you have an awesome charge before you each day. I have a particular situation I would like to seek your input about.

  3. This post rings true as I have recently been affected by downsizing. I am glad it happened because it increased my faith and renewed my walk in Christ taking me to a higher level in him. It also taught me there is a time to speak and a time to be silent (Ecclesiastes 3:7) God was faithful but I needed to downsize me to allow him to speak and I vould hear. God’s blessings on your new journey! Thanks for this post.

  4. Thank you Soror Campbell for your inspiring words. I am on the verge of #2 in your downsizing types. I am overwhelmed, almost burnt out to a crisp and didn’t really know what to call what I’m going through. I like that you apply the term “downsizing” to our need to remove unnecessary clutter from our lives. It is definitely time for me to make a personal shift.

  5. Thank you so much for this, it’s very helpful and I plan on using the tips you’ve provided. I especially need to work on: Evaluate your life. Is it too crowded or cluttered? Are you constantly on the go? Are you on the verge of burnout?

  6. You are always on time with your messages. Also: I LOVE the logo!
