Move On to Move Up

A Firm Foundation Blog: By Teraleen CampbellMove On to Move Up

Sometimes in life, we need to take a few moments and assess where we are.  We may determine that we need to make some adjustments along the way.

A lot has been said in recent weeks about basketball star, Kevin Durant and his decision last year to leave Oklahoma in favor of playing for the Golden State Warriors.  Some have criticized KD’s decision, citing him as an opportunist who joined the team that had beaten him last year in the playoffs.

Allow me to share a different perspective, as it provided me with some life lessons.

Assessing your current situation and life’s status may lead you to realize that a new strategy needs to be implemented in order to reach your goals and achieve success.  Part of developing and more importantly, implementing a new strategy may mean that you will need to leave a place that we are familiar with and even love.  It may mean that you will need to switch up the players on your team or move into a different environment. I’m reminded of Abram’s conversation with God prior to him becoming Abraham. Keep this in mind, everyone will not be part of your Promised Land experience.

Evaluate – Kevin Durant evaluated his career, the potential for achieving a championship with his former team, and concluded that he need to adjust his strategy. Strategic planning is not only applicable in business. It is also a great life practice. We all have goals and dreams.  The question is how will you ensure that they manifest into your life’s reality?

Implement – Once he concluded that an adjustment was necessary, he put his new plan into motion.  Adjustment was but one step, the next was actually moving.  This was probably most difficult because it involved breaking some ties and establishing new ones.  Pray for the right words as you convey your move to key people.  Through it all, remember that you don’t need anyone’s permission to adjust and get yourself back on track!

Appreciate – Thank God for the time that you had, but don’t dwell on what was.  Just as KD had to take his eyes and attention off of Oklahoma City and put it towards building bonds with his new team, you must do the same.  You must stay focused and enjoy the journey as you move up.  The Apostle Paul said “forgetting those things which are behind me and reaching for what is ahead.”  Press on with an appreciative spirit!

Keep in mind that movement may not be convenient, but when God says so do it because you will get what’s coming to you!  There will come a time when he calls you to move out so that He can ultimately move you up!  Looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.
