It’s widely known that life is busy. For some, life is hectic, and for others it’s downright out of control.
As a professional woman, who is also actively involved in my church, my sorority, and other community endeavors there are times when I feel overwhelmed. I forgot to mention that I have a pretty active ministry and am a long distance caregiver to my mother.
Every year, by the end of July I become soooooo overwhelmed and nearly burned out that I realize a getaway is absolutely necessary. It almost becomes get away or bust. Last year, I made a hotel reservation, hopped into my car and drove to Atlantic City – all by myself!
Too many of us see the value in taking care of everyone and everything – except us. A few years ago I was diagnosed with OCD. That in and of itself is no big deal. However, my doctor informed me that my body was processing stress through bumps that are on my arms. You see, when I’m stressed, I scratch my arms unconsciously until they nearly bleed. This was a major wakeup call, and I sought ways to reduce and handle my stress better.
Luke 5:16 tells us that Jesus often got away to pray. The Savior took time away from healing others, away from feeding the poor to rest and regroup. If He realized that self care was necessary, then why can’t you?
Consider a few steps to help you maintain your spiritual wellness
- Positive affirmation
- Self reflection
- Journal
- Meditate
- Pray
- Take a sabbatical – get away
- Walk in who God has called you to be!
While you may not be able to implement all of the steps in your life, I encourage you to incorporate at least three for thirty days. If you do so consistently, I guarantee that you will notice how your outlook on life has changed for the better. Try it, you might like it!
